In short, the Global Talent Visa is a permanent visa in Australia for people who have an internationally recognized record of exceptional and outstanding achievement in a field related to technology.

Since Immigration announced it would increase places for this subclass (Allocated 15,000 for the current F/Y) EMSA has received many enquiries wanting more information about the Visa criteria, costs, and pathways.

So here is a quick recap on the most important factors this visa will require: To express interest in priority processing within the Global Talent Visa program, the applicant must be highly skilled in one of the target sectors listed below: AgTech– Space and Advanced Manufacturing – FinTech – Energy and Mining Technology – MedTech – Cyber Security – Quantum Information, Advanced Digital, Data Science and ICT. Each sector has a list of applicable occupations, for example, FINTECH = Developer Programmer, or CYBERSECURITY = Information Security Analyst.

Step 1 is to identify if your occupation falls under one of the sectors immigration list. Once your occupation and sector are identified, you need to assess whether you would meet the “talent” requirements, which could be:

  • Prove they are internationally recognized with evidence of outstanding achievements
  • Still, be prominent in their field of expertise
  • Provide evidence that they would be an asset to Australia, in their area of expertise
  • Have no difficulty obtaining employment in Australia or becoming established in their field
  • Have a recognized organization or individual in Australia nominate them as global talent, in the same field as the applicant

Step 2 will be to see if you can meet the other eligibility for the global talent visa, as it will be dependent on the applicant’s personal circumstances including skills, work experience, qualifications, and ability to attract a salary of at least AUD 153,600

Step 3 will then be to find a company to endorse you. You must be endorsed by a nominator, whose national reputation is in the same field and you and satisfies a prerequisite of being:

  1. An eligible Australian Citizen, resident
  2. Eligible New Zealand Citizen
  3. An Australian organization

Step 4 – apply and prove your claims, Immigration suggests evidence such as:

  • Relevant qualifications and awards, particularly from internationally recognized organizations
  • Supporting statements from the government, professional, scientific, cultural, sporting, or other relevant bodies
  • Documentary evidence which demonstrates an exceptional and outstanding record of achievement that positions you amongst the very best in your field

The evidence supplied to support your record of achievement must also demonstrate prominence in the field within the 2 years immediately before applying. It should include:

  • A reference from a person or organization qualified to assess your claims
  • Profiles of your achievements in any media, such as magazines, newspapers, or TV programs

Step 4 part 2 – prove you can work or support yourself in your field of achievement. (You can’t include income from work outside your field. Even if this is only part of your overall income.) 

Step 5 – meet the English, character, and health checks.
